Aerial Surveillance Course

The Aerial Surveillance Course (ASC) has been designed to meet the needs companies who have identified the requirement to undertake Aerial Surveillance as part of an oil spill response, ensuring designated observers can safely and effectively quantify spill volumes and report accurate situational data.

Certification Validity: 3 years from date of issue

Introduction:

The aim of the course is to provide industry with personnel competent and capable of undertaking aerial surveillance operations as part of oil spill response activities.

Target Audience:

Designed for operations personnel, government employees, and specialised contractors who may be tasked with aerial surveillance duties during an oil spill.

This training provides the essential upskilling required to safely and effectively serve as a critical "eye in the sky" during a live response.

Course Prerequisites:
Please note that valid HUET and/or BOSIET certifications are strict, mandatory prerequisites for attending this course.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Interpret hydrocarbon characteristics to determine spill weathering and movement during aerial observation.
  • Design and manage structured, efficient aerial surveillance flight paths.
  • Quantify and document accurate spill dimensions, volumes, and trajectories using standard reporting tools.
  • Present coherent and strictly standardized situational reports directly to the Incident Management Team (IMT).

Learning Methods:

An intensive two-day course that blends foundational theory with real-world application.
  • Day 1 (Theory): Classroom-based instruction focused on flight coordination, accurate spill quantification, and data analysis.
  • Day 2 (Practical): Live surveillance operations and in-flight assessment, featuring a 20–30 minute supervised flight with an AMOSC assessor (subject to asset availability) to solidify in-air data collection and post-flight reporting skills as part of our competency-based training and assessment framework.
